Overview

Haplogroup S-Y28857 is a downstream lineage under S-P202 that represents one of the localized highland-specific radiations in New Guinea. It is found primarily in smaller, isolated valleys where microdemographic processes such as founder effects, low inter-valley mobility and cultural isolation promoted the persistence of narrowly distributed paternal lineages. Although less widespread than S-M230, S-Y28857 plays a significant role in reconstructing fine-scale demographic structure within the highlands.

Geographic distribution

S-Y28857 is concentrated in select highland valleys of Enga, Western Highlands and parts of Chimbu Province. It appears at moderate frequencies in local populations with long-term horticultural traditions. Limited occurrences in the Bismarck Archipelago likely reflect later movement from mainland New Guinea.

Ancient DNA

  • Holocene highland archaeological sites show genomic patterns consistent with S-Y28857 ancestors.
  • Microregional analyses of ancient Papuan genomes reveal multiple paternal lineages with narrow geographic ranges, consistent with the structure observed in S-Y28857.
  • Comparisons between ancient horticultural sites and modern highland communities indicate stability of localized paternal clades such as S-Y28857.

Phylogeny & subclades

S-Y28857 forms several closely related microclades associated with specific highland valleys. These subclades often align with linguistic divisions and settlement patterns shaped by rugged topography. While not as expansive as S-M230, it contributes to the detailed phylogenetic map of S-P202 radiations.

Notes & context

S-Y28857 highlights the exceptional microregional structuring of Papuan highland paternal diversity. Its limited distribution provides insight into valley-specific demographic histories.
