Overview
R-Z9 is a significant branch under R-L48 with a distribution strongest in northwestern Europe. Its expansion corresponds to late Bronze Age and early Iron Age demographic growth in the Germanic world. Z9 includes numerous downstream branches, many with regional associations.
Geographic distribution
Most common in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and England. Also present in Norway and Sweden.
Ancient DNA
- Some Iron Age Germanic individuals belong to Z9 derived lines.
- Early medieval remains from Anglo Saxon England include Z9 subclades.
Phylogeny & subclades
R-Z9 divides into additional branches such as R-Z326 and R-Z330, each with dense internal structure.
