Overview
R-Z30 is a prolific branch of R-L48 strongly represented in northern Europe. It is deeply connected with Germanic Iron Age populations and later expansions such as the Anglo Saxons and Norse. Z30 includes several region specific clusters that track historical movements across the North Sea.
Geographic distribution
Common in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and England. Found at lower levels in Scotland and Ireland from Viking Age admixture.
Ancient DNA
- Viking Age samples from Scandinavia and the British Isles include Z30 derived lineages.
- Some early medieval Germanic individuals also show Z30 haplotypes.
Phylogeny & subclades
R-Z30 includes major downstream clades such as R-Z2, R-Z7 and R-Z1, each containing detailed substructure.
Notes & context
Z30 is important for reconstructing Norse and Anglo Saxon expansions across northern Europe.
