Overview
R1a-YP341 is a major downstream branch under R1a-YP340 and forms an essential component of eastern Slavic and Baltic paternal ancestry. It arose in the late Bronze Age among populations occupying regions across modern Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and northern Ukraine. These areas were characterized by fortified hilltop settlements, early metalworking centers and cultural interactions that linked forest and steppe populations.
During the Iron Age, YP341 lineages became deeply integrated into Baltic tribes as well as proto Slavic groups inhabiting the Polesia and Dnieper regions. Archaeological contexts associated with early hillfort cultures exhibit evidence of individuals carrying haplotypes ancestral to YP341. The medieval period brought further diversification, particularly among Slavic tribes involved in the formation of the early Rus polity. Several YP341 subbranches exhibit demographic expansions consistent with tribal level founding events.
Today, YP341 stands out as a significant element of paternal structure across eastern Europe and is especially prominent in populations of Belarusian and Baltic ancestry.
Geographic distribution
R1a-YP341 reaches high frequencies in Belarus and Lithuania. It is also common in Latvia, northern Ukraine and western Russia. Moderate frequencies occur in Poland and Estonia. Smaller but notable levels appear in Finland due to contact zones linking Baltic and Finnic peoples.
Ancient DNA
- Baltic Iron Age burials show haplotypes ancestral to YP341.
- Iron Age and early medieval sites in Belarus provide evidence for early YP341 lineages.
- Proto Slavic remains in northern Ukraine include downstream YP341 individuals.
- Medieval Rus archaeological sites show strong YP341 presence.
- Forest zone Iron Age individuals from Russia display multiple subbranches of early YP341.
Phylogeny & subclades
YP341 includes several key internal branches such as YP479, YP520 and additional microclusters. The phylogeny reveals complex layering of Bronze Age origins with significant medieval diversification.

- R1a-YP520
- Additional Baltic-Slavic microclusters
Notes & context
R1a-YP341 is crucial for reconstructing medieval eastern European demographic patterns, especially across regions connecting Baltic and Slavic tribes.
