Overview
Haplogroup R-Y5589 is a substantial subbranch of R-Y5587 within the R-Z2106 cluster and represents a distinct paternal lineage with strong ties to the Caucasus, eastern Anatolia and parts of the Balkans. Its formation in the late Bronze Age corresponds with a period of intense cultural interaction in the regions surrounding the Black Sea, where steppe, highland and Anatolian populations were increasingly intertwined.
Y5589 appears to have developed in or near the Caucasus and then spread through regional networks into eastern Anatolia and the Balkans. Many of its subclades show clear clustering in Armenia, Georgia and northeastern Turkey, indicating long term continuity in these mountainous regions. Other branches extend into Greece and the western Balkans, reflecting the broader southward and westward reach of Z2103 lineages.
This lineage helps document the role of steppe derived R1b in the formation of populations in the Armenian Highland and the Caucasus, as well as its contribution to the paternal ancestry of later historical groups in southeastern Europe and Anatolia. The internal structure of Y5589 points to multiple founder events and sustained regional presence from the Bronze Age through the medieval era.
Geographic distribution
Y5589 is most common in Armenia, Georgia and eastern Turkey. It is also present at notable levels in Greece, Albania, Bulgaria and parts of Romania, and occurs sporadically in Iran and the Levant.
Ancient DNA
- Bronze Age samples from the Armenian Highland and the southern Caucasus show R-Z2103 lineages compatible with the ancestry of Y5589.
- Iron Age individuals from the Caucasus and eastern Anatolia may include early Y5589 subclades.
- Its presence in southeastern Europe fits with documented gene flow between the Caucasus, Anatolia and the Balkans during the Bronze and Iron Ages.
- Continuity into medieval times is suggested by the regional clustering of modern Y5589 lineages.
Phylogeny & subclades
R-Y5589 is a daughter clade of R-Y5587. It contains multiple downstream branches that correspond to regional clusters in the Caucasus, eastern Anatolia and the Balkans. These subclades are defined by additional markers such as YP4173 and related SNPs.

- Caucasus focused branches
- Anatolian and Balkan microclusters
Notes & context
Y5589 highlights the importance of the Caucasus and eastern Anatolia as zones of long term continuity for R-Z2103 lineages and illustrates the complex interplay between steppe and highland populations in this region.
