Overview

R-Y32 is a crucial early Holocene branch of R-M73 and represents one of the key paternal layers of the pre-Bronze Age Sayan–Altai region. Emerging shortly after the initial Upper Paleolithic–Holocene transition in Inner Asia, Y32 became integrated into a mosaic of mobile hunter-fisher-forager groups occupying the Yenisei and upper Ob tributaries. Archaeogenetic evidence situates its formative environment within a cultural sphere that later contributed ancestry to Bronze Age populations such as Okunevo and early Karasuk, though Y32 itself remained relatively isolated and did not participate extensively in the later steppe expansions that reshaped much of R1b in Asia. Modern geographical clustering of Y32 in parts of Tuva, Khakassia, northwestern Mongolia and pockets of eastern Kazakhstan corresponds with mountain-steppe ecotone populations historically linked to proto-Turkic and pre-Turkic pastoral groups. Y32's relatively broad age range suggests a long period of low-level population continuity prior to the modest medieval expansions that likely introduced the lineage into several modern Turkic-speaking groups.
