Overview
O1b1a2b is a significant downstream branch of the widespread O1b1a2-M95 clade. While O1b1a2a is closely associated with early Austroasiatic and Munda expansions, O1b1a2b appears to represent parallel diversification among mainland Southeast Asian agricultural populations, particularly in areas influenced by later Bronze Age and Iron Age cultural transitions.
Geographic distribution
Notably found in Vietnam, Laos and northeastern Thailand. Present at moderate levels in Myanmar and Yunnan, and found sporadically in India through admixture with broader M95-bearing groups.
Ancient DNA
- The formation age suggests divergence within well-established Southeast Asian farming communities.
- O1b1a2b frequencies correlate with distribution of Bronze Age cultural complexes in mainland SEA.
- Ancient genomic signals from later Neolithic sites align with M95-derived sublineages including O1b1a2b.
Phylogeny & subclades
A sister clade to O1b1a2a under the M95 umbrella. O1b1a2b contains region-specific branches tied to Vietnam and Laos and reflects a diversification pattern somewhat later than the main M95 expansions.
Notes & context
Important for capturing the full structure of O-M95 paternal diversity in mainland Southeast Asia.
