Overview

J1-ZS647 is a downstream descendant of the J1-L147.1 cluster, a major Arabian-origin lineage. Its ancestral populations emerged during the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age in the northern Arabian plateau and the desert corridor linking the Hejaz with the southern Levant. These groups relied heavily on pastoral lifeways, integrating water-source-based mobility with early caravan trade networks. During the Bronze and Iron Ages, ZS647-bearing communities took part in the demographic expansions associated with emerging North Arabian tribal confederations. Their downstream phylogeny indicates tightly structured microbranches correlated with specific Arabian interior populations. Over time, some of these branches appear in regions historically linked to early Arabic-speaking tribes.

Geographic distribution

Common in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq; moderate in Syria and the Gulf; low in Egypt and Iran.

Ancient DNA

  • Bronze Age Levant individuals display J1-P58 variation consistent with proto ZS647.
  • Iron Age North Arabian samples show diversification patterns aligned with early ZS647.
  • Early Islamic burials include downstream ZS647 derivatives linked to tribal expansions.

Phylogeny & subclades

A regionally structured J1-L147.1 lineage with Arabian interior microclades shaped by pastoral mobility and founder effects.

  • ZS647*
  • Arabian interior branches
  • Levantine derivatives

Notes & context

A lineage important for tracing early North Arabian tribal genealogies and desert mobility systems.
