Overview

I1-Y7275 is a north-central European branch of I1 associated with Iron Age inland populations east of the Elbe. It reflects moderate-scale continuity among early Germanic and later West Slavic–Germanic interaction zones. This lineage provides fine resolution where the Z58 continental radiation interfaces with early medieval cultural transitions.

Geographic distribution

Most common in Germany (Brandenburg, Saxony), Poland, Czechia and Denmark. Minor levels appear in Sweden and Norway. A small portion appears in Britain and the US via recent migration.

Ancient DNA

  • Iron Age burials east of the Elbe show I1 haplotypes consistent with the early Y7275 root.
  • West Slavic and Polabian sites from the early medieval era contain paternal lines compatible with Y7275 microstructure.
  • Anglo-Saxon England includes occasional continental I1-Z58 derivatives near the Y7275 cluster.

Phylogeny & subclades

Defined by SNPs Y7275, Y7280 and BY15395. Forms a microbranch parallel to Y6220 and Y7237. Displays shallow internal branching with regional signatures.

  • I1-BY15395
  • Basal Y7275*

Notes & context

Helps distinguish inland continental components of the Z58 radiation from coastal Baltic-Scandinavian branches.
