Overview
I1-Y13006 is a Baltic–Finnic aligned microbranch of the I1-Z58 lineage. It formed among early Iron Age communities surrounding the eastern Baltic coastline, especially within regions linking Estonia, Latvia and southern Finland. Its demographic footprint indicates limited but persistent continuity among coastal and forest-zone populations engaged in Baltic maritime trade and regional cultural networks.
Geographic distribution
The highest modern frequencies are found in Estonia and Finland, with additional representation in Latvia, Lithuania and coastal Sweden. Minor but notable occurrences appear in northwest Russia and Karelia. Scattered presence in North America reflects recent migration from Baltic and Finnish populations.
Ancient DNA
- Baltic Iron Age individuals from Estonia and Latvia show I1 haplotypes clustering near the root of the Y13006 family.
- Some Viking Age burials from the eastern Baltic islands contain paternal lineages phylogenetically adjacent to the Y13006 node.
- Finnic-speaking Iron Age sites in Finland and Karelia include upstream I1-Z58 lineages consistent with Y13006 localization.
Phylogeny & subclades
I1-Y13006 is a downstream clade within the Z58 radiation. Its defining SNPs are Y13006, Y13009 and BY4822. Downstream structure is shallow but regionally specialized, aligning closely with Baltic–Finnic demographic history.

Notes & context
I1-Y13006 is an essential clade for distinguishing Baltic–Finnic patrilineal ancestry from Scandinavian and Germanic components within the broader I1-Z58 complex.
