Overview

G-FT70281 is a lineage whose demographic rise took place around the eastern Mediterranean, especially during the late Hellenistic, Roman and early Islamic periods. Although derived from older Anatolian G2a2b1a ancestry, FT70281 displays a distribution consistent with coastal Levantine trade networks, long-distance merchant communities and urban populations operating along the eastern Mediterranean frontier.

Geographic distribution

Modern carriers are most frequent in Lebanon, Israel, western Jordan and coastal Syria. Additional occurrences appear in Cyprus and southern Turkey. Rare individuals in the Arabian Gulf reflect later historical movement rather than origins.

Ancient DNA

  • Hellenistic and Roman-era Levantine burials show upstream SNP paths that lead into the FT70281 clade.
  • Late Roman–Byzantine individuals in coastal Syria exhibit STR and partial SNP profiles consistent with early FT70281 development.
  • Early Islamic period remains from the Levant show hints of downstream FT70281 diversification.

Phylogeny & subclades

The branch divides into two principal lines: a Levantine urban cluster and an Anatolian–Cypriot transitional cluster. Its internal structure reflects trade-linked founder effects and urban demographic cycles.

  • G-FT70281* basal Levantine clade
  • G-FT70281a coastal Levant urban lineage
  • G-FT70281b Anatolia–Cyprus connecting branch
  • rare Arabian fringe microlineages

Notes & context

This lineage adds a clear Levantine urban-trade demographic layer to the G2a atlas, bridging classical and early Islamic era population flows.
